Tyson Stengle
Signs with Cats
FGeelong Cats
October 10, 2021
Stengle signed with the Cats on Monday, Mitch Cleary of 7NEWS Melbourne reports.
ANALYSIS
Stengle finished the 2020 campaign with a four-match ban for having an illicit substance, and he didn't play in 2021 after he parted ways with Adelaide in March. He'll attempt to carve out a role with Geelong in 2022.
Patrick Dangerfield
30 disposals in Prelim loss
MGeelong Cats
September 10, 2021
Dangerfield logged 30 disposals (19 kicks, 11 handballs) and made four tackles during Friday's 125-42 loss to Melbourne.
ANALYSIS
Dangerfield managed to reach 30 disposals for the first time in four games but it wasn't enough as the Cats' star forwards struggled to make a dent in the defense or the increasingly lopsided scoreline. By only playing 16 times this season, Dangerfield made less appearances than in the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign, so he'll need to improve more in 2022 on what were decent numbers with 23.2 disposals and 4.4 marks per game.
Joel Selwood
Ends season with 24 disposals
MGeelong Cats
September 10, 2021
Selwood logged 24 disposals (eight kicks, 16 handballs) and made eight tackles during Friday's 125-42 loss to Melbourne in the Preliminary Final.
ANALYSIS
Selwood needed to do more but that's often been the story of his season, as a disappointing team performance spelled the end of the season for the Cats. With a decent average of 23 disposals per game, he's a reasonable target next season if he plays more consistently.
Sam Simpson
Out of Friday's game
MGeelong Cats
Concussion
September 9, 2021
Simpson (concussion) will not play Friday versus Melbourne.
ANALYSIS
Simpson was withdrawn from the lineup just hours before the preliminary finals match. Quinton Narkle entered the lineup as an emergency, but it's unclear if he'll be named in the 22 for the match. Should the Cats win Friday, Simpson should have at least a chance to be available for the Grand Final.
Brandan Parfitt
Out for finals
MGeelong Cats
Hamstring
September 7, 2021
Parfitt will miss the rest of the finals after suffering a high-grade tear of his left hamstring, his club announced Monday. He's expected to be ready in time for the preseason.
ANALYSIS
Parfitt went down early into the semi-final win over GWS but he won't play a further part in the end of the campaign. Fortunately, the Cats haven't dealt with many long-term injuries this season, though the timing is poor on this one. With 18.8 disposals and 5.6 tackles per game in 2021, Parfitt has plenty to offer on his day.
Sam Menegola
Big effort in win
FGeelong Cats
September 4, 2021
Menegola scored two goals and one behind to go with 29 disposals (19 kicks, 10 handballs) in addition to making eight marks during Friday's 103-68 win over GWS.
ANALYSIS
Menegola is one of a few different Cats who can light up the stat sheet, though it won't happen with any consistency. He's still recorded at least 20 disposals in 10 straight games and that's a solid streak to hold in the finals.
Tom Hawkins
Game-breaker in win
FGeelong Cats
Quadriceps
September 4, 2021
Hawkins scored five goals and one behind to go with eight marks made and suffered a corked quad during Friday's 103-68 win over GWS, according to Nathan Schmook of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Hawkins was the key to another successful game in the finals as the Cats now have another tough matchup with Melbourne. He's scored at least three goals in three of the last four games and will be a good player to watch if he's fit over the rest of the season.
Brandan Parfitt
Hurts hamstring in win
MGeelong Cats
Hamstring
September 4, 2021
Parfitt suffered a left hamstring injury during Friday's semi-final win over GWS, according to Nathan Schmook of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Parfitt had logged at least 20 disposals in three of his last four starts before departing early against the Giants. He'll need to be hopeful of continued advancement in the postseason, as a minor issue could put him out for at least one game.
Mark O'Connor
Out for 2-4 weeks
DGeelong Cats
Hamstring
August 31, 2021
O'Connor will be sidelined for at least two weeks due to a hamstring injury, Mitch Cleary of the AFL's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
O'Connor logged just three disposals (all kicks), a mark and a free kick prior to his departure from the team's loss to Port Adelaide last week. Unfortunately, the hamstring could prevent him from playing again this season, though a return for the grand final could still be on the table.
Tom Stewart
Eyeing grand final return
DGeelong Cats
Foot
August 31, 2021
Stewart continues to rehab in hopes of a return for the grand final, David McPherson of the Cats' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Stewart underwent Linsfranc surgery and is reportedly doing well in his recovery to this point. He will continue to work his way back from the issue and hopes to be ready for the grand final, should the Cats continue to progress without him.
Patrick Dangerfield
Fine for semi-final
MGeelong Cats
August 31, 2021
Dangerfield (hand) will play in Friday's semi-final match versus the Giants, David McPherson of the Cats' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
There was some concern surrounding Dangerfield when it was learned that he played through a fractured right hand, but the fact that he was able to do so last round seemed to bode well for his chances of playing again Friday. He will indeed keep his spot in the team's lineup.
Zach Tuohy
Slated for semi-final return
DGeelong Cats
August 31, 2021
Tuohy (hamstring) is in line to play in Friday's semi-final match versus the Giants, David McPherson of the Cats' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Tuohy hasn't played since Aug. 6 against the same Giants, when he racked up a goal, 18 disposals and seven marks prior to exciting the match. He should be a big factor again Friday and could be key to the team keeping its season running.
Patrick Dangerfield
Plays through injury
MGeelong Cats
Hand
August 29, 2021
Dangerfield played through a fractured right hand in Friday's qualifying final loss to Port Adelaide.
ANALYSIS
Dangerfield apparently suffered the injury in Round 23 but was able to play through the issue. He appeared to be in pain during Friday's matchup, but the Cats haven't offered more specifics regarding the injury. He's expected to play in the semifinal against Greater Western Sydney on Friday, but the issue may require more attention following the season.
Patrick Dangerfield
23 disposals, eight clearances
MGeelong Cats
August 27, 2021
Dangerfield obtained 23 disposals, eight clearances, five tackles and three marks Friday as Geelong fell to Port Adelaide 86-43 in a qualifying final match at Adelaide Oval.
ANALYSIS
Dangerfield dipped below 30 touches for a second-straight showing, but garnered a team-high eight clearances and clangers each plus a game-leading nine inside 50s in Friday's loss. The veteran midfielder closes out the Cats' 2021 campaign having averaged 22.9 disposals, 5.8 clearances, 4.6 marks, 3.2 tackles and 1.1 goal assists across 14 total appearances.
Mitch Duncan
135 fantasy points in losing effort
MGeelong Cats
August 27, 2021
Duncan pulled down 33 disposals, 13 marks, three clearances and a single tackle Friday as Geelong fell to Port Adelaide 86-43 in a qualifying final match at Adelaide Oval.
ANALYSIS
Duncan tied a career-high for kicks (24), set a new personal-best for rebound 50s (10) and tallied a double-digit mark aggregate for the fifth time this season in Friday's losing effort. The 30 year-old also recorded 130+ fantasy points for the third time in seven showings in the defeat and closes out the season currently ranked the AFL's No. 6 in marks (7.7) and No. 11 in score involvements (7.09) per game on the year.
Zach Tuohy
Won't play Friday
DGeelong Cats
Hamstring
August 24, 2021
Tuohy (hamstring) will not return from Port Adelaide on Friday, Mitch Cleary of the AFL's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Tuohy's absence will extend to a third week now that's been ruled out. The fact that he was listed as a test suggests the defender could be able to return before the end of the finals.
Mitch Duncan
Set to return
MGeelong Cats
August 24, 2021
Duncan (knee) will play in the opening game of the finals against Port Adelaide, Mitch Cleary of the AFL's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Duncan will return after a two-month absence. He topped 100 fantasy points in six of his first seven matches this season, but it's uncertain how effective he'll be after an extended time on the sidelines.
Zach Tuohy
Could return for finals
DGeelong Cats
Hamstring
August 24, 2021
Tuohy (hamstring) is listed as a test for the opening game of the finals against Port Adelaide, according to Mitch Cleary of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Tuohy has missed the last three weeks with a strained hamstring but will push to return for the biggest game of the season so far. With solid averages of 22.6 disposals and 5.4 marks per game, Tuohy offers decent value as an alternate to some of the more expensive Cats available, should Tuohy be able to play himself.
Mitch Duncan
Closer to returning
MGeelong Cats
Knee - PCL
August 24, 2021
Duncan (knee) is listed as a test for the opening game of the finals against Port Adelaide, according to Mitch Cleary of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Duncan hasn't played since mid-June and though there isn't an official word on when he'll return, his situation should be trending in the right direction and a last-minute decision is the most likely thing to happen. Through 10 games played in 2021, Duncan has averages 23/7 disposals and 7.2 marks per game.
Joel Selwood
Strong in loss
MGeelong Cats
August 21, 2021
Selwood scored one goal to go with 28 disposals (17 kicks, 11 handballs) and made six tackles during Saturday's 81-77 loss to Melbourne in Round 23.
ANALYSIS
Selwood ended the first stage of the season with a flourish on the back of his fourth consecutive game with at least 21 disposals. Should he continue to get plenty of touches in the finals, Selwood will be one of the more reliable players available from the Cats.
Lachie Henderson
Leads team in points
DGeelong Cats
August 21, 2021
Henderson logged 24 disposals (21 kicks, three handballs) and made 15 marks during Saturday's 81-77 loss to Melbourne in Round 23.
ANALYSIS
Henderson led his team in fantasy production with a new season-high of 15 marks taken in this game. With the finals up next on the schedule, Henderson should be worth a few looks in the right matchup after logging at least 20 disposals in three of his last four starts.
Shaun Higgins
Managed for Round 23
MGeelong Cats
Coach's Decision
August 19, 2021
Higgins has been managed for Round 23 against Melbourne.
ANALYSIS
Higgins logged 26 disposals and nine marks during Round 22 but he'll get some rest before the finals begin.
Esava Ratugolea
Listed as emergency
FGeelong Cats
August 19, 2021
Ratugolea is listed as an emergency for Round 23 against Melbourne.
ANALYSIS
Ratugolea had suffered a corked quad during Round 22 and won't necessarily play this week, but at least he's able if needed as a last resort. Heading into the finals, he'll be another useful piece when fit.
Gryan Miers
In lineup for Round 23
FGeelong Cats
August 19, 2021
Miers (leg) made the initial lineup for Round 23 against Melbourne.
ANALYSIS
Miers hasn't played in a month due to a leg injury but gets back into the team just before the finals. In 11 games played, he's scored 11 goals this season.
Gary Rohan
On track to return
FGeelong Cats
Hip
August 18, 2021
Rohan (hip) is expected to return in Round 23 versus Melbourne, per AFL Ratings.
ANALYSIS
Rohan was listed as a test but didn't play last week. He's posted fewer than 70 fantasy points in each of his last seven matches, so the forward isn't likely to draw much virtual interest.
