Labors through first loss
Perez (1-1) picked up the loss Sunday against the Red Sox, allowing four runs on six hits over four innings. He walked four and struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The day began with a seven pitch walk which set the tone for the Boston effort against Perez, who was consistently battled throughout his outing and labored through 91 pitches over four-plus innings. Perez came into the game with just seven walks and 16 strikeouts through four starts spanning 24.2 innings, but uncharacteristically walked four and struck out seven on the day, leading to the elevated pitch count. Despite allowing eight baserunners through four, Perez held the Red Sox in check by allowing just two runs. He was then pulled after allowing the first two runners to reach base in the fifth with a one-out single by Reese McGuire off reliever Ryder Ryan plating both inherited runners and saddling Perez with four earned runs allowed. Perez will look to rebound in his next start, tentatively slated to take place during next weekend's series in San Francisco against the Giants.

Bullpen role may await
Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press speculates Perez could spend the rest of his career working out of the bullpen.
ANALYSIS
Perez started in 20 of his 35 appearances for Texas last season, and he had a 4.98 ERA as a starter compared to a 2.70 ERA as a reliever. The veteran left-hander was also unable to maintain his rotation spot in 2021, though he bounced back in 2022 with a career-best 2.89 ERA. Perez has been a back-end starter throughout most of his career, and he's not likely to receive much of a guarantee to start in 2024, wherever he lands.

Good for Martin Perez. After a decade of serving batting practice in big-league games, Perez put together a career year in 2022 to secure $19.65 million from the Rangers in the form of the qualifying offer. He cut his home-run rate dramatically and with that trimmed his ERA to 2.89, ranking 14th among qualified starters. The lefty did not point to any one reason for his shocking turnaround but said instead it was simply a matter of maturity and growth on the pitching mound. History screams regression though the estimators paint his performance last season in a generally favorable light. The one thing Perez has provided consistently throughout his career is the ability to eat innings and that volume alone provides a good deal of value in certain points formats. In leagues where you need to protect ratios, invest at your own risk.
