2024 Fantasy Outlook
Winckowski had a nice 2023 season out of Boston's bullpen, posting a 2.88 ERA over 84.1 innings with four wins, three saves and 18 holds across 60 appearances. The 25-year-old added velocity (+2.2 mph) on his sinker that he threw 96.3 mph on average, which ultimately induced more whiffs. He also threw more cutters (+24.5% usage over 2022) and his strikeout rate took a big jump, from 13.9% in 2022 to 22.3% last season. This mark was still below league average, but the right-hander maintained a high ground ball rate (51.2%) despite issuing free passes at an 8.4% clip. Red Sox manager Alex Cora recently suggested Winckowski could get a look in the rotation in 2024, which syncs up with how he was used throughout the minors and his rookie season. However, his numbers are much worse as a starter (5.66 ERA, 1.55 WHIP over 68.1 innings), which could warrant a relief role after all. Read Past Outlooks

Covers 3.1 innings in start
Winckowski didn't factor into the decision in Sunday's 6-1 win over the Pirates, allowing one run on three hits over 3.1 innings while striking out one.
ANALYSIS
Winckowski made his first start of the season in place of Garrett Whitlock (oblique), tossing a season-high 3.1 innings while limiting the Pirates to one run. After tossing no more than 28 pitches over his three previous outings, Winckowski was pulled after 46 pitches Sunday. The 25-year-old righty will get a chance to stretch out his arm more, with Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe noting that Winckowski will stick around in the rotation. His next start is expected to come next weekend, when the Red Sox welcome the Cubs to Fenway Park.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
No consideration as starter
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Winckowski hasn't been in consideration to start in the wake of Nick Pivetta's elbow injury, per Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican.
ANALYSIS
Winckowski pitched well as a reliever last season with 18 holds and a 2.88 ERA in 60 appearances, and Boston appears content to keep him in that role for 2024. It likely doesn't help the right-hander has struggled so far this year with a 4.63 ERA, 2.06 WHIP and 17:8 K:BB over 11.2 frames.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Winckowski made his major-league debut last season but failed to impress with a 5.89 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 44:27 K:BB in 70.1 innings. The right-hander had a solid strikeout rate throughout his minor-league career, but that didn't immediately follow him to the big leagues as it was a measly 13.9 percent. However, he had a 51.9 percent groundball rate and a 4.61 xFIP indicates he wasn't helped out much by Boston's defense. Winckowski is likely to see the majors again in 2023, but more highly-touted prospects like Brandon Walter, Chris Murphy and Connor Seabold could have a leg up for any starting opportunities.
