2021 Fantasy Outlook
After winning a championship with the Bucks, Forbes returns to San Antonio. The 28-year-old joins an interesting cast of characters looking to fill the void left by DeMar DeRozan's departure. At this point, determining who will lead the 2021-22 Spurs in scoring is anyone's guess. Forbes is a candidate, after shooting a career-best 47.3 percent from the field and a career-high 45.2 from behind the arc. And remember that Forbes saw much more floor time in 2019 through 2020 with the Spurs (26.6 minutes per game) than he experienced last season with Milwaukee (19.3 minutes per game). The problem is volume. Forbes will be competing with Derrick White, Lonnie Walker and Devin Vassell for minutes at shooting guard. And he'll be battling newly acquired Doug McDermott for catch-and-shoot three-point opportunities. Dejounte Murray and Keldon Johnson are the only Spurs guaranteed both minutes and priority in the offense. Everything else in San Antonio is a bit of a crapshoot. Forbes is on just a one-year contract with the Spurs. We expect him to perform in a reserve role on a team that will struggle to score. Read Past Outlooks

College/International Summary

Forbes split his time in college between Cleveland State (2012-14) and Michigan State (2014-16). He helped lead the Spartans to the 2016 Big Ten Tournament title and the 2016 NCAA Tournament. In his first season at Michigan State, the Lansing, Michigan native helped lead the Spartans to the 2015 NCAA Final Four. As a Michigan State senior, he led the Big Ten in three-point field goals (112) and three-point field-goal percentage (.481) and was second in the conference in three-point attempts (233) in the 2015-16 season. At Cleveland State, he led the Horizon League in three-point field goal percentage (.424) and was second in the conference in both three-point buckets (81) and third in three-point attempts (191) in the 2013-14 season. Forbes went undrafted during the 2016 NBA Draft and eventually signed with the San Antonio Spurs during the summer of 2016.

Forbes agreed Tuesday with the Spurs on a contract, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After going undrafted in 2016, Forbes spent his first four seasons in San Antonio before signing with Milwaukee on a one-year deal last November. After averaging 10.0 points and 2.2 three-pointers in 19.3 minutes per game over 70 appearances for the NBA champions, Forbes declined his 2021-22 player option earlier this offseason before deciding to return to the place where he began his career. A career 41.2 percent shooter from downtown, Forbes will give the Spurs' second unit a much-needed perimeter threat following Patty Mills' move to the Nets.

2019

Forbes played in all 63 pre-hiatus games for the Spurs during the 2019-20 shortened season, making 62 starts. The 6-foot-2 guard averaged a career-high 2.3 made three-pointers per game to go with 11.2 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists per contest. Forbes came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, topping double-digit points in 14 of his first 15 contests. On Oct. 28, Forbes grabbed a season-high seven rebounds to go with 14 points during a home win over the Trail Blazers. He scored a season-high 25 points on Dec. 3 against Houston, drilling 10-of-13 shots from the field to fuel a 135-133 victory. He surpassed 20 points twice more in a six-game stretch during January, scoring 21 on Jan. 10 against the Grizzlies and dropping 24 on the Suns on Jan. 20. During the latter game, Forbes hit a career-high 8-of-11 three pointers. Forbes drained at least one three-pointer in all but six of his appearances. Before the bubble, the 26-year-old was tied with Patty Mills for the team lead in made three-pointers (148). A quad injury prevented Forbes from making any appearances in the NBA's Orlando bubble.

2018

Forbes appeared in all 82 games for the San Antonio Spurs during the 2018-2019 campaign, starting 81 of those contests. The Michigan State product set career highs with 11.8 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per contest. Forbes shot 45.6 percent from the floor, including an impressive 42.6 percent from three-point range. He finished eighth in the NBA in three-point field goal percentage. Forbes notched the first double-double of his NBA career with 24 points and 11 rebounds against the Phoenix Suns on Dec. 11. The points were a season high and the rebounds set a career high. Forbes hit at least three treys in 30 contests for the Spurs. He connected on a career-best six three-pointers against Toronto on Jan. 3. Forbes averaged over 30 minutes per tilt during the Spurs' first-round playoff series against the Denver Nuggets. In seven games, Forbes averaged 10.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.0 assists. He scored 19 points in Game 7 of the series.

2017

Forbes appeared in 80 games for the San Antonio Spurs during the 2017-2018 season, his second with the franchise, and started 12 of those contests. Forbes set career highs with 6.9 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.0 assists per contest. Forbes shot 42.1 percent from the floor, including 39.0 percent from three-point territory. He led the squad in three-point field goal percentage. He scored in double figures on 28 occasions. Forbes scored a season-high 23 points against Sacramento on Jan. 28. He hit a career-best five three-pointers in that clash. Forbes appeared in four playoff games for the Spurs. His best outing came in Game 1 of the Western Conference First Round against the Golden State Warriors. In that contest, Forbes collected 14 points and three rebounds in 25 minutes.

2016

Forbes played for the Spurs in both the Las Vegas and Salt Lake City Summer Leagues, averaging a combined 11.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. His performance earned him a spot on the Summer League All-Tournament Second Team. That led San Antonio to sign Forbes to an NBA contract. He spent much of his rookie campaign with the Austin Spurs of the D-League. In 19 games with Austin, Forbes posted per game averages of 23.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.9 treys. He shot an outstanding 45.9 percent from deep in the D-League. Though his playing time in the NBA was minimal, Forbes began to receive more minutes with San Antonio late in the season. On April 7, he exploded for season highs of 27 points, three rebounds, six assists and four three-pointers in a win over Dallas. That performance helped Forbes earn a spot on the playoff roster. He partook in six postseason games, averaging 12.1 minutes and 3.3 points per contest.

Forbes carved out a nice role for himself with the Spurs over the past two seasons, averaging 11.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.2 threes and 2.0 assists in 26.7 minutes. He's moving on from San Antonio, however, as the 27-year-old guard inked a two-year contract with Milwaukee. With the Bucks, Forbes should be in line for a similar role as the team looks for a consistent three-point threat outside of Khris Middleton. From a fantasy perspective, Forbes is a pure three-point contributor. He'll likely go undrafted in most formats but could make for a waiver-wire option for those desperate for threes.
Forbes put together a solid showing for the Spurs in his third NBA season, averaging 11.8 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists. He converted 2.1 threes per game while shooting 42.6 percent from downtown and 45.6 percent from the floor. Forbes was called on to step up with Dejounte Murray out of the lineup due to an ACL tear, and he logged 28.0 minutes per game in 81 starts -- both of which were career highs. Murray will be back this season and should resume starting point guard duties, which could force Forbes into a backup role if Derrick White starts at shooting guard. In that case, it's unlikely Forbes is worth drafting in standard leagues, as failed to crack the top-120 in most fantasy formats last season. Any reduction in role essentially results in Forbes being a deep-league add only.
Forbes entered the Spurs' regular rotation for the first time in his career during the 2017-18 campaign. After averaging just 7.9 minutes as a rookie, he took the court for 19.0 minutes per game and added career highs across the board of 6.9 points, 1.4 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.1 three-pointers. He shot an impressive 39 percent from the three-point line as well, making him a threat from all over the floor. That solid showing earned Forbes a two-year contract extension with the Spurs this offseason, so he's set to remain with the team that gave him an opportunity as an undrafted free agent back in 2016. The Spurs picked up DeMar DeRozan after trading Kawhi Leonard to the Raptors and he's expected to see big minutes at the shooting guard position. However, Forbes has the ability to play both point guard and small forward at times as well, so he still should have the chance to increase his workload a bit in his third year, especially with Tony Parker moving on during free agency. Look for Forbes to be a scorer with the second unit, but he may need some injuries to occur higher up on the depth chart to become a legitimate Fantasy target.
