Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Carsen Cade Edwards was born in Houston. He has one brother, Jai. He attended Atascocita High School, where early on he played both basketball and football. After his sophomore year, he decided to focus on basketball. After his junior high school season of hoops, the Houston Chronicle named Edwards basketball Player of the Year. After his senior season, Edwards was named to the MaxPreps All-America Fourth Team and received first-team All-State honors. The guard played on the US national team for the 2017 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup in Egypt, where they won a bronze medal. Edwards also played for the US national team for the 2017 Taipei Universiade and earned a silver medal. Edwards is good friends with Patriots linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley, whom he met while they both attended Purdue. Learn more about Edwards on Instagram @cboogie_3 and on Twitter @Cboogie_3. Carsen Edwards played three years for the Purdue Boilermakers. During the 2016-17 season, Edwards was the only Big Ten freshman to drain at least 45 three-pointers (49) and gather at least 35 steals (36). The speedy guard played in all 36 games for Purdue, averaging 10.3 points and 1.4 made threes per contest. In his sophomore season, Edwards became a permanent starter, nearly doubling his scoring to 18.5 points per game. More importantly, he led the Boilermakers to their first-ever 30-win season. That success led Edwards to being named to the First Team All-Big Ten squad. Returning to Purdue for his junior season, Edwards increased his scoring to 24.3 points per contest. Edwards would lead Purdue all the way to the South Regional Final in the NCAA Tournament, where the Boilermakers would lose to Virginia despite Edwards' 42 points. He was named to the All-American Second-Team by the (USBWA), First Team All-Big Ten and later the Most Outstanding Player in the South Region of the Tournament.

ANALYSIS
Edwards will make the jump to Europe after he struggled to gain much traction as an NBA player since being selected early in the second round of the 2019 NBA Draft. The 5-foot-11 guard proved to be one of the G League's most dynamic scorers during the 2019-20 and 2021-22 campaigns, but he averaged only 3.7 points (on 36.4 percent shooting from the field), 1.1 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 9.8 minutes over 72 appearances across the last three seasons with the Celtics and Pistons.

G League rights set to expire
GFree Agent
March 31, 2024
Edwards, whose G League rights are held by the Greensboro Swarm, will become an unrestricted free agent in the G League player pool following the conclusion of the 2023-24 league year.
ANALYSIS
Edwards is currently operating as a key figure on Bayern Munich in EuroLeague action, as the Purdue product has started 28 games and is averaging 11.1 points and 1.8 assists despite hitting just 31.0 percent of 5.5 threes per game. He last appeared in the G League with Salt Lake City in 2021-22, where he boomed for 21.3 points per game on 46.6 percent shooting overall.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
2019
The 23-year-old guard has struggled to find a role in his first two seasons with the Celtics. He's appeared in just 68 games and has averaged 3.6 points on 37.2 percent shooting. Despite his struggles, Memphis is content taking on young projects, as the organization seems to still be working on a rebuild despite relative success over the past two seasons. That said, expectations should be tempered for Edwards, who likely won't see action every game.
During a season when the Celtics really could have used points off the bench, Edwards missed a nice opportunity as a rookie. Instead, the Purdue product appeared in only 37 of 72 possible games for Boston -- also spending time with the G League Red Claws. Edwards never found his shooting stroke, hitting only 32.8 percent of his attempts. That inaccuracy made it harder for coach Brad Stevens to overlook Edwards' defensive limitations. The 6-foot-1 guard now faces competition from newly signed Jeff Teague and rookie Payton Pritchard, as well as returning two-way player Tremont Waters, for back-up point guard duties. Neither Edwards nor Waters saw anything close to meaningful minutes at the end of last season, and expectations should probably stay low for Edwards in 2020-21.
With Edwards, is Boston looking at Isaiah Thomas 2.0? The diminutive Purdue rookie has a knack for creating his own shot, which was on full display during Summer League, where Edwards averaged 19.4 points from only 23 minutes per game. Clearly, Danny Ainge saw something he liked, quickly signing the second-round pick Edwards to a four-year agreement. Edwards averaged 24.3 points per game during his last season at Purdue while shooting 35 percent from behind the arc. But let's all take a deep breath. Edwards is squarely behind star Kemba Walker and Marcus Smart on the Celtics' point guard depth chart, though Smart will also see time as a wing. The 21-year-old's best-case scenario for 2019-20 is to fill the role Terry Rozier played last year, which would mean a generous 22 minutes per game. That's probably a stretch, especially if fellow rookie Romeo Langford's thumb heals as expected before Oct. 1. Boston views Edwards and Langford as long-term scoring threats with upside. How much of that upside we get to view this season is debatable.
