Magic Get Off To Impressive Start, Rout Pistons
The Orlando Magic defeated the Detroit Pistons, 119-103, at Amway Center on Friday night.

The Magic (10-40) and the Pistons (11-37) are two of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference and are already thinking about next year's draft, but based on what happened in this matchup, it would be reasonable to think one team is far advanced on the rebuilding process compared to the other one -- at least from a development perspective. The Magic got off to a 39-19 score in the first quarter and that allowed them to set the tone of the game early, and they wouldn't look behind the rest of the way. Even though the other three quarters were tight, and the Pistons actually outscored their opponents in two of those, the game was all but over once the opening 12 minutes came to a close. Orlando raced out to a comfortable victory in a game where they shot 49.4 percent from the field, while the Pistons only shot 36.8 percent from the field. That was a deciding factor in the outcome of the contest.

Rookie Franz Wagner led the way for the Magic with a 24-point, three-rebound performance, while Mo Bamba registered a double-double after pouring 18 points and 11 rebounds. Cole Anthony finished with 12 points, nine assists and six rebounds, and Wendell Carter Jr. contributed 11 boards and three assists to go along with nine points. Veteran Terrence Ross had 21 points off the bench, and Gary Harris contributed 10 points and six assists off the bench as well.

Cade Cunningham only had eight points for the Pistons in what was a battle between two of the league's best rookies. Saddiq Bey ended with 17 points and five rebounds, while Cory Joseph delivered 10 points. They were the only two Pistons starters that scored in double digits. The leading scorer came off the bench since Trey Lyles posted 18 points while adding two blocks. Frank Jackson had 12 points.

Hawks Pull Away Late To Defeat Celtics
The Boston Celtics defeated the Atlanta Hawks, 108-92, at StateFarm Arena on Friday night.

The Celtics (25-25) and the Hawks (23-25) could very well be defined as two underperforming teams this season, but at least in this particular game, the Hawks stepped their game up when they needed it the most and raced out to a win thanks to a strong start and a solid finish. Atlanta jumped out to a 32-20 lead following the first quarter and one would have thought they would have taken full control the rest of the way, especially after a 30-27 score in the second quarter. However, Boston played the second half with a bigger sense of urgency and reduced the 15-point deficit to just three points following a 30-18 score in the third period. Boston did not have enough in them to mount a late fourth-quarter comeback and while they kept things close, ultimately the Hawks would end up securing the win following a 28-15 score in the final 12 minutes of action. Atlanta shot 46.1 percent from the field in the win, while the Celtics only shot 34.9 percent from the field in this defeat.

Trae Young and John Collins both led the Hawks in this victory since both scored 21 points -- Young also added nine rebounds, six assists and two steals, while Collins contributed nine boards and four blocks. No other Atlanta starter scored in double digits in this one, though. Bogdan Bogdanovic chipped in with 19 points off the bench, and Danilo Gallinari had 14 points while not missing a single shot from the field.

Jaylen Brown ended with 26 points and 12 rebounds in the loss, while Jayson Tatum contributed 20 points, six rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal. Marcus Smart delivered 17 points, six rebounds and two assists, and Robert Williams III posted a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. No other Boston player scored in double digits. Al Horford had one point.
